We're one week closer now to Nike Track Nationals on July 2 in Eugene, Oregon, and the rankings are starting to shift a bit, as teams roll into their final meet or two of the state series season.  Over this past weekend, a handful of ranked squads competed in their state championship events, while the rest seemingly competed in their sectional, regional, district, conference finals.

Here's this week's News & Notes from around the U.S.:

To kick the week off right, lets start with Long Beach Poly TC (CA).  At the CIF Southern Section Finals over the weekend, LBP girl's and boy's teams both showed why they could take home both team titles come July 2.  On the girl's side, the team scored ten top three finishes, including Tara Richmond winning the high jump and triple jump, while Melia Cox won the 100m hurdles and placed second in the triple jump, with the team also winning the 4x400m relay.

On the boy's side, LBP won the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay, while bringing home four more top three finishes, in what could be considered the toughest sectional in the entire country.  However, US#1 Vista Murrieta TC (CA), who was one of four top 15 squads at the Southern Section, took their results one step further, placing seven top three finishes, including Chris Navarro winning the 110m hurdles and Bernard Quinn winning the 400m dash.

The biggest movement in the NTN rankings this week came from a Southern Section team as well, with Loyola TC (CA) moving up to US#4.  The squad shows strong distance and field event depth, with junior Elias Geydon winning the DII races in the 1,600m and 3,200m events, while the squad also placed top three in the high jump, pole vault, long jump and triple jump.

CIF Southern Section Results are HERE.

Perhaps the most dominant performance of the weekend came from current US#2 boys team East Kentwood TC (MI).  At their regional championships, East Kentwood simply dominated the competition, scoring a massive 216 point total (second place scored 72 points), while winning all four relays, and nine individual events.  Sprinters Jonathan Henry and Mohamed Mohamed led the way, with Henry winning the 100m and 200m events, while Mohamed picked up the title in the 400m dash.

If we can look at East Kentwood's relay times for one second, you'll see how good they are, and how deep they are.  In the 4x1, the squad ran 41.6, 4x2 was done in 1:27.7, while the 4x4 in 3:18.1.  Then, as if they weren't dominant enough, they took home the 4x8 relay title in an outstanding time of 7:47.3.  Can this squad be stopped?  Results HERE.  Good article HERE.

Not to be overlooked, the newest top ten ranked team on the girls side, US#8 Columbia TC (NJ), crushed their competition at their sectional championships over the weekend.  Led by eight event wins, including four by standout Brittney Jackson, the team is coming on strong at the right time of the season.  Another week or two of peaking, and this team could easily push into the top five, perhaps even the U.S. top three.  Results HERE, Article HERE.

In state meet action, U.S. top fifteen ranked Millbrook TC (NC) girls squad placed sixth at their state championships, finishing with 29 points behind distance runner Samantha George, who won the 1,600m run, and Lillian Wyss, who finished third in the pole vault. Results HERE.

Elsewhere, Southwest TC (NE) finished fifth at the Nebraska State T&F Championships.  The U.S. top 15 team scored 56 points, but was overwhelmed by unranked Omaha North (NE), who won the team title with incredible depth and 128 points.  For Southwest, Joslyn Soucie placed third in the 100m and 300m hurdle events, while Kayla Frazier put up a big mark to win the girls shot put in 46-01, while Taylor Johnson was second in the girls 800m dash.  Results HERE.
