Nike Track Nationals

Delsea Regional TC (NJ)

Team Website / NTN Profile

Top Athletes: Sean McPherson (sprints & jumps), Steve Butenewicz (distances), Thomas Berryman (hurdles), Jonathan Hickman (throws), Darryll McDuffie (jumps), Kyle Jones (throws), Kyle Webb (sprints) and Brady Deckert (distances).

Team Strengths: Led by sprints/jumps sensation Sean McPherson, Delsea Regional is one of the many teams showing strength across the entire board of events.  McPherson is going to be able to really help his team early on, but the rest of the team needs to step up a bit if they hope to finish in the top six.  Thomas Berryman and Jonathan Hickman are strong in the 110m hurdles and discus, as well.

Key to Success: One area that seems ripe for a team like Delsea Regional to step in and score some big points, are the field events.  With a very strong group in the throws and jumps, this squad is poised to push for a top half finish.  Perhaps the X-factor for the team is Darryll McDuffie.  He’s been a consistent high jumper for the team all season long, and an inch or two PR in the event would give his squad a big boost.

Q&A with Coach Ronn Flaim

NTN: With NTN right around the corner, how is the team looking?

Ronn Flaim (RF): The team is healthy and excited about this great opportunity to compete at a meet of this magnitude.  Like everyone else, we have had a long layoff since our state meet but the kids have continued to work hard through graduation, football all-star games, etc. We expect to have some good performances.

NTN: The talent this year in New Jersey was incredibly strong.  How does having such competitive in-state competition help you for a meet like Nike Track Nationals?

RF: In our classification of Group 2 in New Jersey, we competed against some of the best talent in the country. All Americans like Mark Jones in the high jump, Corey Crawford in the long jump, Miles Shuler Foster and Zamir Thomas in the sprints and the 4xmile team of Haddonfield.  Any success we have in this meet will because of the competition we face in state competition.

NTN: The team seems to have a nice spread of talent across all events this year.  Is this something you plan?

RF: Our number one goal for the program is to be as well rounded as possible every year. We have a talented group of seniors and juniors who have committed to the program and I have an excellent coaching staff that gives a lot of time and commitment to our kids.  Ron Deckert (distance/javelin ), Linda Marchese ( hurdles/high jump), Sal Marchese (discus/long jump), Scott Costello (triple jump/distance), and Dave Allonardo (pole vault) have played a major part in our success.

NTN: Sean McPherson showed time and again this season that he is one of the best athletes in the state of New Jersey.  What does he mean to your team?

RF: Sean McPherson is the heart and soul of our team. He is not only our most talented kid, but one of our hardest working kids.  He does everything right, all the time. I cannot say enough good things about Sean, he represents everything we want our athletes to be.  I am happy that Sean and the rest of our seniors get to go out at an event like Nike Track Nationals. They have given us 4 years of their very best and they deserve to experience an event of this magnitude.
